]]> Article marketing absolutely works to bring in that initial bit of cash to make you stay the course on your online journey.

Even better, you don’t need to buy “spinner” software or submission services or anything else. This is all free.

In July of 2009 (so not even a whole month has passed), I started a new site in a legal related niche.
The Site

The site uses a basic wordpress theme optimized for high adsense CTR rates (the CTR so far on this theme is about 4x my SBI site’s, with an ECPM over $100).

I wrote 5 pages for the site and uploaded them right around the holiday.

I also put Google analytics on the site to track where traffic was coming from and more importantly what traffic resulted in adsense clicks/affiliate sales.

Marketing With Articles

Then I published 2 articles on ezine articles. They had good headlines, used good but somewhat incomplete information to encourage people to click the resource box below. For example, I would talk in the article about the risks of using a fly-by-night online company to draft your legal document, and then direct them to check out my site for recommended providers.

The day the articles were approved by ezinearticles (which takes up to a week if you’re not a platinum member), I started getting traffic. Between 4-10 visitors a day. Not a lot, but these are true visitors, and not spider visits as SBI’s internal numbers often show.

Monetary Results

So far this month, the site has made $17 and change with adsense. Almost all of it from ezinearticle referrals.

It has also made a $17.00 affiliate sale for [legal document] making software.

The month isn’t over yet.

So, about $35 so far this month on a brand new site. Spent nothing on promotion, and did not link to it from any of my existing sites. From pure typing on the computer (and using a $17 theme, which I can re-use on as many sites as I want). Site hosting on a shared hosting account I have for other non-SBI sites, so no additional cost there either.

There has been no significant search engine traffic so far.

Why did I try this strategy?

There was a site for sale on sitepoint (now flippa) which claimed to be making $1,000/mth and it was only a couple months old. I started emailing the owner and asking him how he did it. He was real nice, and even made some screen capture videos to walk me through his income proof. He basically did what I outlined above, but instead of 2 articles, he wrote and submitted about 200 (spent almost $1000 outsourcing them).

The fact is that system really does work. If 2 articles made me $35 in the first month with no SE traffic, I could see how 200 articles could make $1,000.

It’s important to note that these sites used high CTR themes (2 column, adsense right below headline, navigation to the right–very simple blog theme); and we picked high adsense payout topics. His was related to mortgages, mine to the legal market.

How it fits into SBI

I’m not telling anyone to abandon SBI or anything like that. My SBI site makes as much in a day as that new site makes in a month, and my SBI site has hardly been updated in the past couple of years. SBI works.

I’m just saying that adding simple article marketing, particularly for new sites, will help a lot.

From the frustrated posts I see from newbies, many would be happy to just make back their $25/mth SBI fee during the first year. That first real check from Google is awesome–proof that “this internet thing” actually works. I want SBIers to experience a check in hand during the first 3-6 months.

Writing a dozen articles or so as outlined above will result in targeted traffic.

Bottom line:

Don’t buy any software/services yet. Learn how to do it manually and see how it works first.

Write some articles for ezinearticles. The important thing is to have a good headline, give some good information but leave out the ultimate solution (they need to come to your site for that).

Don’t worry about “keyword stuffing” your article. Just write naturally.

Your resource box at the bottom of your article should sell the click. If the article is about a topic that is better covered by a specific page on your site, then direct link to that page as well as your homepage.

You probably “know” that articles generate targeted traffic.

However, there is knowing something because you read it in the AG or on a forum, and KNOWING it because you took some action and at the end of the month saw $30, $40, $50 in your bank account. Big difference.

1. Spacing After Punctuation: One (1) space only is
required after every punctuation mark (period,
exclamation mark, question mark, colon, semicolon,
commas, etc.), including bullets and numbers.

2. Never use Excessive Punctuation!!!!! This will not
create a greater sense of urgency or strong emotion,
especially in formal writing.

3. Periods and commas always go inside of quotation
marks.

Example: “I think you’re great.”

4. There is never a space before a period or before a comma.

5. When doing this “…” you should use only 3 dots.

6. When using dashes, use two in a row.

Example: Punctuation–10 Rules

7. Use no spaces on either side of a hyphen.

Example: We need twenty-five boxes.

8. Use a question mark only after a direct question.

Example: Can I ask you a question?

9. Use parentheses to enclose words or figures that clarify.

10. If the last word in a sentence ends in a period, do not
follow it with another period.

There are several social bookmarking sites, and here are some examples:

Del.icio.us is a great website that serves as your virtual bookmark, allowing you to access your favorites from any computer, and to share them with others. Pages added to Del.icio.us are also ranked by their popularity,i.e. how many users have added the same page to their favorites. The more popular the page is, more Del.icio.us readers will access it, becoming your readers.

Stumble Upon is another social bookmarking site where people chose website they have “Stumbled Upon”. This service is very common thanks to a Firefox plug-in and can highly  increase the popularity of your article.
Some more recommended social bookmarking sites: Reddit, Propeller, Mister Wong and others.

Make sure to add all your articles to these networks (requires a one-time sign up process), and tell your friends about it. It costs nothing and it will most likely bring more visitors to your articles.

]]> You may have a main area of expertise, and then multiple sub-topic or different topics that you write articles about (some to pay the bills and others to feed their creative spirit). To avoid personal author brand erosion and solidify your expertise in front of the target niche that you write about, you must come up with a strategy to separate your various article topics.

A solution is to create multiple versions of your name or pen-names that you write under so that each one is locked in on a particular area of expertise.

Here’s a fictitious name I picked out of the air to illustrate an example as to how many separate author names could be created out of a single persons name:

* Suzanne Jo Parker
* Suzanne J. Parker
* Suzanne J.P.
* Suzanne Jo P.
* Suzanne P.
* Suzi P.
* SJ Parker
* S. Parker

You get the idea. Each of these author names is STILL the same person, yet you can choose to lock each variation of the name to a separate topic to write your articles about. When using this strategy, a person reading your article may attempt to read others that you’ve written, but they will only see your other articles about the same topic. There will be no author brand erosion.

Example: “Suzanne J. Parker” would write articles
about Financial investing, and “Suzi Jo Parker”
would write articles about basketball.

In the offline world, this multiple author brands issue is also a factor, but it is even more important for the online world where a reader can quickly identify other articles you’ve written when they are hungry for more. Give them more of the same quality original articles that they are already reading, but isolate their attention by only writing about one topic of expertise under one single author name or variation of your author name. This will strengthen your message and your author brand at the same time.

As a bonus to this “authors with multiple brands” strategy, it will be easier to track your articles by each unique variation of your author name that you used, instead of finding all of your articles of every topic under one author name.

]]> I bought some software to design my site. I used the free web pages offered by my internet provider. I assigned prices to my books and waited for the world to beat a path to my door.

Then I kept waiting. And waiting.

You see, that’s not how the internet works. Google doesn’t send searchers to sites at random; it sends them for a reason. They don’t place some sites atop the rankings and some sites at the bottom at random either.

They do it for a reason…and the sites that aren’t at the top don’t get found. I started to realize: if you don’t have a strategy for landing atop those rankings, forget it. You’re better off buying lottery tickets.

Fortunately, I don’t give up easily. (Or maybe it would be more accurate to say that, after 15 years as a write at home screenwriter, I wasn’t ready to go get a regular job!)

I decided that maybe the problem was that I didn’t have my own domain name. (Wrong! It was part of the problem, but a small part.)

So I bought a domain name and started looking for a web host, the company that would host all my silly web pages on its server for searchers to (not) find.

Looking for web hosts was one of the luckiest things I ever did. Because that’s when I stumbled upon SiteBuildIt. You see, SiteBuildIt just happens to be a web host, but hosting is only the tiniest fraction of the service they provide.

A hobby is anything that makes you relax, happy and takes your mind away from everyday troubles. However, you will need a fail-safe, step-by-step system of turning your knowledge, hobby or skills into a profitable business. HOBBY stemmed from the time when people would ride a wooden horse as an actual pastime. Hobbyists are people who are passionate about a specific material or an activity. Hobbies also focus more on self-fulfillment rather than financial return and can include anything from collecting things, like coins or rocks; or making things like beaded jewelry or clay figures; or doing things, like reading or playing soccer.

Hobby is almost defined as not work. So starting your own business can be scary, especially if you've never owned a business before. Therefore it is imperative that you start out on the right foot in the very beginning with the proper tools, resources, website design, keyword research tools, templates and web-hosting.

You can starting off slow by keeping your job and starting a business part-time which can help reduce the amount of capital necessary. Starting a small business will probably be a life changing experience, and again, you will want to make sure that you do everything right in the very beginning.
